Level 1: record the direct facts
Start with five-by-five pairwise grids. Record direct matches and exclusions, then inspect the attributes on the official cards for the fingerprint and description evidence. One check excludes the other cells in its row and column. Keep the unresolved either/or choice separate.
Level 2: decode and test the alternatives
The scrambled message needs letter rearrangement, not a fixed alphabet shift. Resolve it before applying its meaning to the grid. For the exclusive either/or constraint, test one branch on a copy: one option must be true and the other false. Reject a branch when its consequences contradict direct evidence. There is no witness panel in the observed case, so do not invent a liar.
Level 3: separate the grid from the crime
Check all associations, then read the crime clue to select the murderer and the matching weapon and location. Crossed-out clues are your progress marks, not false statements. If an accusation fails, restore those lines and recheck the constraints.
