Letter shifts and Detective Code are different

How the decoder ring works

Check the code named in your case before choosing a method. The rotating alphabet dial supports a letter shift; the Detective Code shown in the publisher's Volume 1 preview uses a reversed alphabet.

For a shift cipher, move every letter the same number of positions, wrapping around the alphabet. Detective Code instead pairs A with Z, B with Y, C with X, and so on, as shown in Exhibit A of the publisher's Volume 1 preview. The official website offers a rotating dial and a separate Detective Code button. Do not confuse either substitution with an anagram, which changes letter order.

  1. Copy the coded line onto paper.
  2. If the clue says Detective Code, use the reversed alphabet. If it specifies a shift, align the alphabets by that shift.
  3. Apply the same letter mapping to the entire line. Original example: HELLO becomes SVOOL in reversed-alphabet Detective Code.
  4. Only then mark the grid. The code is a clue, not the solution.

RP Minis lists a 2-inch metal Secret Decoder Ring with a 48-page mini book, ISBN 9798894143699, for US publication on 2026-10-27. Its checked list price is $14.95 USD. As of 2026-10-01 it is a preorder, not an already released accessory. The physical product is optional; paper alphabets work for these substitutions.
